Ukrainian banks actively inviting new deposits and decreasing their crediting activity

The banking system reduces its loan share in assets and increases the deposit share in liabilities. Lending reduction, which started in June, is still observed in September.

As of 1 September 2012, the capital of banks made up UAH 165.6 bn. or 15.0% banking liabilities against UAH 165.8 bn. (the equivalent of USD 20.74 bn. at the NBU’s rate, 15.0% liabilities) recorded on 1 August 2012. For the first eight months of 2012 the capital has grown by 2.98%, while in 2011 it increased by 16.9%, and as of 01.01.2012 it made up UAH 161.0 bn. (the equivalent of USD 20.15 bn. at the NBU’s rate). At the same time, through May the capital did not go up and even decreased occasionally. The active capital growth has been observed since June 2012.

Paid registered authorized capital of banks totalled UAH 172.5 bn. on 1 September 2012: it insignificantly increased against UAH 171.9 bn. as of 01 January 2012. In 2011, this index increased by 17.8%.

As of 1 September 2012, the banks’ liabilities totalled UAH 938.9 bn., they decreased against UAH 943.3 bn. recorded on 1 August. For the first eight months of 2012 the banks’ liabilities have increased by 4.6%. Following the results of 2011, the banks’ liabilities went up by 11.6%, to UAH 897.6 bn. (the equivalent of USD 112.34 bn. at the NBU’s rate).

We’d like to stress that funds of individuals were growing at outrunning rates: their liability share increased to 36.8%, though it reached 33.7% on 1 January 2011.

As of 1 September 2012, assets of the Ukrainian banks decreased to UAH 1,104.5 bn., and the general assets – to UAH 1,248.1 bn. against UAH 1,109.2 bn. and UAH 1,253.0 bn., respectively, recorded on 1 August.

For the first eight months of 2012 assets of the Ukrainian banks have increased by 4.33%. At the same time, in 2011 assets of the Ukrainian banks grew by 12.4%, and on 1 January 2012 they totalled UAH 1,058.6 bn. For eight months the general assets increased by 2.9% against UAH 1,212.9 bn. recorded on 1 January 2012 (the equivalent of USD 151.8 bn. at the NBU’s rate). This index went up by 11.26% in 2011.

Since the year’s beginning the loan portfolio has decreased by 1.03%, to UAH 816.257 bn. In addition, in August the loan portfolio decreased by 1.4% compared to UAH 828.233 bn. recorded on 1 August.

As of 1 September 2012, 175 Ukrainian banks got licenses for banking operations issued by the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). In August the decision was made to close down one bank (Basis Bank in Kharkov).
